Aamir Ikram - Tribute
JD My Friend,
My deepest heartfelt condolences to all the family and friends of John Derrick – JD.
JD and I were friends on and off the field for nearly 30yrs, from his Glamorgan years to his Stewardship of Cricket Wales. As the incoming captain of Aberdare CC it is my responsibility to comment on the passing of our friend and leader.
When his Glamorgan career ended he slipped seamlessly into playing alongside me for Wales. We became comrades’ and even shared accommodation whilst playing away fixtures. During this time Hercule Poirot detective series was on TV and JD nicknamed me “Poirot” due to my resemblance to the character.
JD had an amazing understanding of our shared passion of Cricket, he trusted my bowling so much that he would place himself at silly point without helmet or protection pads, he was a fearless sportsman. In his recent illness he was just as fearless and like a warrior he fought to the final declaration.
I am honoured to have been chosen by JD and the club committee to captain our proud club for the upcoming season. We find ourselves as a club having to move on with the foundations he established and the tireless work he gave.
JD’s shoes will never be filled but I will try my hardest and give it my all to make the 2017 season “JD Season”.
We now must replicate that work ethic and make the coming season a testimonial to JD and his commitment to our club.
